Daily 5 update

Where are you in the Daily 5 process? What is working well? What still needs work?

  1. The Daily 5 process is not moving at the rate that I thought that it would. However, it is moving forward successfully. The schedule for Daily 5 states that it should be completely rolled out in approximately 5 weeks. We are now in Week 10 and I have rolled out about 80% of the initiative. One thing that I feel is exciting is seeing my students show an increased motivation to read. They REALLY enjoy doing Read to Someone. While Reading to Someone, I notice that they are working more cooperatively together and encouraging their partners. Students are reminding each other of the correct behaviors and there has been a decrease in the reliance on me to "fix" their reading miscues now that they have a partner. My students are very enthusiastic about reading with their bear buddies also. One thing that still needs work is book selection. I have a small group of students who are still choosing books based primarily on interest and less on personal readability. I sometimes have a difficult time regularly meeting with all of my students to make sure that they all choose books that are an appropriate reading level. The small group that consistently makes poor book choices contain some of my most struggling readers. Therefore, it is crucial that I find time to meet with them on an individual level to talk about proper book selection.
